Soil Sampling & Testing

For soil testing we use Eurofins as we work with base saturation levels and these tests give an accurate indication of the levels found in varying soils and we find that working from these, to the set of parameters that the Albrecht/kinsey method of soil testing establishes, that we get excellent results both in pastures and in cropping.

For agricultural soil testing, we always try to start out with an in-depth soil testing services as trace elements play a vital role in nutrient uptake, excesses of some trace elements can antagonise the uptake of other micro and macro minerals, so we work with the soil as a whole rather than focusing attention only on the major elements.  In agriculture we always use and in-depth test, in horticulture, once soils are balanced we can use a more basic test and do in-depth testing every third year.

When soil sampling, we will often do worm counts as well as these give us a good indication of the vitality of the soil.  At 30 worms per spade spit, worms will be providing  a significant portion of the nutrient requirements of the soil via vermicast. Once soils become healthy and balanced with good fungal and microbial populations nutrient solubility is increased which enables plants to access soil nutrients.

We often utilise the services of the Soil Food Web in addition as understanding the bacterial to fungal microbiome balance of the soil, and how that affects plant growth is also important to establish parameters of organics bases and microbes that require addressing. This understanding is particularly valuable in organic farming and soil health, ensuring that the balance between bacteria and fungi supports optimal plant growth.

Once we have determined the degree of any deficiencies or nutrient antagonisms, we will put together a report and a quote that recommends high quality liquid fertilisers, often in conjunction with solid fertiliser as capital fertiliser and at times soil or plant microbes may also me advised. These recommendations often include organic soil amendments to address specific needs identified during testing.

By focusing on regenerative agriculture soil health, we ensure that nutrient solubility and plant nutrient accessibility are maximised, fostering sustainable and productive farming practices.
